From Builder-Grade to Beautifully Personal
This full-home renovation in Palma Ceia centered on smarter space planning and creating a home that feels distinctly personal.
After living in this home for years, these homeowners knew they were ready for a change.
They came to us with inspiration and a clear vision for how they wanted their home to feel. Our role was to help bring those ideas to life, elevating them through thoughtful space planning and design details that created a more cohesive and sophisticated result.
What followed was a full-home renovation that included new flooring, updated lighting, and significant improvements throughout the main living spaces. The heart of the transformation, however, happened in two key areas: the kitchen and the powder room.
While the finished spaces feature beautiful materials and carefully curated details, the success of the project ultimately came from a series of strategic choices that improved how the home functions every day. The result is a home with greater character and a point of view that feels distinctly their own.
Beyond the Finishes
One of the most common misconceptions about renovation is that beautiful results come from selecting beautiful materials.
While that’s partly true, in reality, the most impactful transformations often begin with space planning.
The original kitchen wasn’t necessarily small, but it felt constrained. Dark cabinetry, multiple interruptions in the layout, and a laundry room occupying valuable real estate prevented the space from reaching its full potential. The kitchen felt disconnected from the surrounding living areas and lacked the openness this family wanted for entertaining and everyday life.
As we evaluated the floor plan, we recommended relocating the laundry room. While this wasn’t in the original scope, this would allow the kitchen to extend across the full length of the wall, dramatically improving both function and flow.
That single change became the foundation for everything that followed.
The newly expanded layout allowed for a large central island that now anchors the room and serves as a natural gathering place for family and friends. What was once segmented and somewhat isolated now feels open and inviting.
The homeowners told us they still can’t believe their home could accommodate a kitchen of this scale.
a Kitchen Beyond Builder-Grade
Once the layout was established, the focus shifted to creating a kitchen with a distinct point of view without feeling overly formal.
Warm taupe cabinetry established a rich, mid-tone palette while maintaining a sense of softness throughout the space. A dramatic marble slab behind the range became a focal point, introducing movement and visual interest without overwhelming the room.
Paneled appliances help the kitchen feel more integrated and furniture-like, while brass hardware adds a subtle layer of warmth. Oversized black-and-brass pendants provide contrast and scale above the island, creating balance within the larger space.
Throughout the first floor, new engineered oak flooring installed in a herringbone pattern introduces texture and continuity, connecting the renovated spaces and reinforcing the home’s distinct point of view.
A Powder Room With a Punch
While the kitchen may be the heart of the home, the powder room offered an opportunity to make a more dramatic statement.
The original space was functional but forgettable. Neutral walls, a pedestal sink, builder-grade lighting, and standard finishes left little impression. Yet, because this is the primary guest bathroom on the first floor, it plays a surprisingly important role in how guests experience the home.
Rather than treating it as an afterthought, we chose to embrace the intimacy of the space.
The wallpaper immediately transforms the room, creating atmosphere and a sense of discovery. At first glance, it looks like a beautiful woven textile, but it’s surprisingly practical with a smooth surface that’s easy to wipe clean. Rich layers of pattern draw the eye around the space and create an immersive experience that feels unexpected in such a small footprint.
A sculptural marble sink from Turkey, paired with warm brass plumbing fixtures, adds character and warmth. Updated lighting and a softly curved mirror help balance the room’s bold pattern.
The result feels memorable and full of personality.
Designing for Everyday Life
While it’s easy to focus on the beautifully finished photographs, what makes this renovation successful isn’t any single material or fixture.
It’s the way the home is now experienced.
The kitchen supports gathering more naturally. The circulation throughout the first floor feels effortless. Even the powder room contributes to the overall experience of the home rather than fading into the background.
The best renovations don’t simply change how a house looks. They change how we live within it.
And in this Palma Ceia home, that transformation began with one strategic choice and a willingness to imagine what was possible.
