Why Great Homes Begin with Great Collaboration

Recently, I had the opportunity to be featured by Alair Homes to discuss the role collaboration plays in custom homes and large-scale renovations. While our conversation covered many aspects of the design process, it also reinforced my belief that the most successful projects are never the work of one person.

They are the result of the right people coming together around a shared vision, each contributing their expertise while keeping the homeowner at the center of every decision.

Whether you’re building a custom home or renovating the one you already love, the process can feel as significant as the investment itself. My role as an interior designer extends far beyond selecting furnishings and finishes. I become the bridge between your vision and the professionals responsible for creating it. The architect establishes the framework. The builder manages its execution. I steward your vision from one decision to the next, making sure your home reflects what’s most important for your family long-term.

That work begins long before construction.

One of the greatest advantages of bringing a designer into the project early is the opportunity to ask better questions before plans are finalized. Before we talk about furnishings or finishes, I want to understand how your mornings begin, where the family gathers at the end of the day, what traditions are important to you, what you hope this home will make possible for your family in the years ahead. Those are the conversations that influence everything that follows, from the proportions of a room to the placement of lighting, the function of cabinetry, and the way each space connects to the next.

A home can always be furnished later. Its foundation is much harder to change.

People often delay hiring an interior designer because they’re trying to be mindful of their investment. I understand that instinct. However, what surprises many homeowners is that the costs they’re trying to avoid don’t disappear. They often resurface later through revisions, change orders, spaces that don’t function as expected, or selections that never quite feel right once everything comes together.

Protecting your investment begins with making informed decisions while the greatest number of opportunities still exist. It also protects something that’s far more difficult to replace once it’s gone: your energy.

Building or renovating a home requires an extraordinary number of decisions. Even clients with a strong eye for design are often surprised by the volume of choices waiting for them. At first, those decisions are exciting. However, as the project progresses, they become exhausting. Many homeowners begin with confidence, only to find themselves making selections simply because another answer is needed before construction can move forward.

This is where early collaboration changes the entire experience.

Every successful project is supported by countless conversations taking place behind the scenes. Questions and potential challenges are addressed long before they ever reach you. My role is to provide context and bring you into the process when your perspective is needed. You remain the decision-maker, while I ensure every choice is informed and made with confidence rather than under pressure.

I’ve built relationships with builders and trade partners whose work I know well because we’ve worked alongside one another, solved problems together, and earned each other’s trust over time. That foundation creates a level of communication and collaboration that benefits everyone involved, especially the homeowner. The process feels more cohesive, decisions move forward with greater confidence, and the experience becomes far less overwhelming.

By the end of a project, clients often talk about the spaces they love most. They also remember how supported they felt along the way.

To me, that’s the definition of luxury: the confidence that comes from knowing your investment is being guided with care, trusting the people around your table, and experiencing a high-touch process where communication is clear and every decision moves the project forward with purpose.

The finished home will always be worth celebrating. So is the experience of creating it.
