Design Is the Real Luxury: Reflections from a Naples Home Tour

pool home Naples Florida

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to experience a private mastermind retreat with a group of incredibly talented interior designers. Together, we toured several standout homes in Naples, Florida—ranging from $3 million to $35 million. Each one offered something unique, from grand architecture to high-end finishes, oceanfront views, and even private beach ownership.

And yet, I left with an unexpected takeaway. Of all the homes we visited, the $35 million beachfront estate—the one I assumed would be the obvious standout—wasn’t the one I felt most drawn to.

Why? Because when it comes to luxury, it’s not just about location, square footage, or price tag. It’s about how a home makes you feel.

Luxury Isn’t Just About Price—It’s About Experience

During our tour, we thoughtfully evaluated each home through a designer’s lens—looking at the finishes, lighting plans, plumbing selections, ceiling treatments, wall coverings, and the many elements that come together to create a cohesive, elevated space.

What struck me most wasn’t how big or expensive the home was—but how intentionally it was designed. Some of the smaller properties felt more luxurious simply because of the attention to detail. A $9M home, for example, offered a rich, layered experience where every element felt considered and connected. It wasn’t about scale—it was about soul.

I believe that a home’s true value lies in how it lives and how it supports your day-to-day routines, special moments, and personal tastes.

Design Is a Strategic Investment

This experience reaffirmed something I share often with clients: great design is not just beautiful—it’s practical, emotional, and lasting. While property value is certainly important, it’s the thoughtful details that shape your daily experience. Without them, even the most sought-after address can feel unfinished and impersonal.

The most rewarding homes aren’t just styled well for photos—they live well for the people inside them. That means:

  • The sofa you sink into at the end of the day feels like a hug

  • The kitchen flow brings your family together for meals, conversation, and laughter

  • Every room reflects your energy and lifestyle, not just a magazine spread or fleeting trend

When you approach a home this way—balancing real estate goals with thoughtful, intuitive design—you’re not just spending, you’re investing.

A Jewel Box Can Outshine a Giant

If given the choice, I’ll always favor a well-designed jewel box over a sprawling home that lacks flow or feeling. Good design elevates every square foot, no matter the size of the home or the prestige of the zip code.

And that’s the beauty of what I do. Whether I’m working on a downtown condo, a beach retreat, or a family’s forever home, I help my clients create spaces that feel tailored, refined, and entirely their own. Great design can bring that ease and elegance wherever you are.

Curious what intentional design could do for your home—or your next investment?
